The Royal Wedding.

The media hyped up the day as a "modern-day fairy tale," which sounds totally cliché, but was so true!
Lovely Kate looked absolutely gorgeous in her dress, and the ceremony was beautiful and moving. I got up super early and watched it before school in real-time, then I watched the entire ceremony again after school! I absolutely love weddings, and the chemistry between Kate and William is so striking and adorable. I love their quiet senses of humor (did you see the cute look they gave each other during the ceremony when the speaker boomed in his baritone voice, "you have both made your decision today"?) They are amazing role models, and are so down-to-earth and absolutely picture-perfect. Can you imagine what it must have felt like to be Kate yesterday? She looked every inch a princess, and was so poised and graceful, as perfect as she could have been. The entrance was moving, the vows were beautiful, the carriage ride was breathtaking, the kiss was adorable, and Kate and her prince and family were glowing throughout the entire day. What a lovely event!

Things that I think are funny.

I love it when someone starts telling you a story and this happens:

"So, I was sitting in my hotel room in New York and -- oh wait, have I already told you this story?" They then wait expectantly as your mind swirls with any story you may or may not have heard from them, about New York or hotels or how to make pistachio ice cream and you usually just want to say at them, "how am I supposed to know, you haven't told me the story yet!" But usually you say "no," or "I don't think so," and they continue. It's especially awkward when you realize halfway through that they have indeed already told you the story, but you can't stop them because they would say "I already asked if you'd heard it!" Well, how was I supposed to know what story it was from a lame 12-word preview?

Almost as awkward as when you pass your former spanish teachers in the hall and they ask you (in spanish) how you are and you don't know whether or not to respond to them as a friend or as their student. Which you are not technically anymore. But the subject addresses change, you see.

Almost as awkward as when your cat walks across the keyboard when you're typing and accidentally presses a button that de-activates the entire keyboard and you don't know which button she pressed because she is just a flurry of paws sometimes.

Almost as awkward as when your history teacher makes you watch "Invisible Children" during your free block and then when it's over you bring the DVD up to her and she asks excitedly, "Did you like it?" And then you stare at her and reply, "I mean ... I don't like the idea of it, but it was ... a well-made documentary? If that's what you're asking?"

Almost as awkward as talking about prom with your friend during lunch and asking, "so, are you going with Jo- anyone?" when you realize mid-sentence that you don't know if her boyfriend Jon and her are still together or not. (They are! Phew!)

Almost as awkward as when you are in a math study group before school and you ask about a question on the homework and the girl sitting next to you looks at your pages of homework that you stayed up late finishing and says, "Umm, would you mind if I just looked at that for a minute and wrote some things down? I didn't get around to it last night." And then I replied, "Oh, well for the most part all I wrote down were my answers, I didn't write down the full questions for some of them, so you borrowing it wouldn't be helpful to you if you didn't do it." And then having her reply, "Oh, well just in case [the teacher] checks it." And then you're forced to look her in the face and say, "No, you cannot copy my homework." Awkward.

Almost as awkward as going to get ice cream with your mother after school because we're cute like that and ordering the same type of ice cream and having the boy behind the counter put an extra bit on mine and then going back to the car and having your mother say, "He gave you extra because he likes you!" And then looking down at your paint-and-clay-stained jeans and black hoodie zipped all the way up and messy hair and saying "or because I didn't ask for sprinkles on top. Either way."

Almost as awkward as when you have dinner with your parents and all they talk about is plants and why there are so many cars in the neighbor's driveway. And then having your dad say, "maybe someone died!" And then you just go back to talking about plants.

All of these things happened to me today. It was an exciting day.

Ideas.

Last year, my video production teacher told the class: "The worst enemy of a great idea is a good idea."

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. At school, I see people think of a good idea, whether it be what to draw or wear or what to eat for lunch, and they stick with only good ideas without letting the great ones fully develop. Why settle for anything less than extraordinary? I understand that there are priorities -- people won't generally bring in homemade sushi with chocolate souffle for dessert for a normal everyday lunch. It's certainly easier, for time and sanity's sake, to grab a sandwich and a piece of fruit or a yogurt and be done. I do it myself! But when it comes to a long-term project, people often stick with one of the first good ideas they have and go through with it, often getting bored halfway through. I see this all the time in art classes especially. I'm in a very talented ceramics class right now, but there are definitely some people, (who are perhaps new to art, to be fair) who go with the kind of standard, run-of-the-mill projects that have been done by other students in the past and are easy to execute. Projects like this often turn of fine and dandy, but are often missing that "wow" factor. I know these projects can often be attributed to people not caring enough about the class, or not wanting to put in the time and effort. However, imagine what amazing things would be done if people weren't afraid of their great ideas and let their creativity flow. We would live in a much more vibrant world, that's for sure! I also see it in backpacks and boys' clothing. Blue, black, grey. Yawn.

Harry Potter fun fact of the Day!

Flitwick's original appearance early in the series

Davis as Griphook

Flitwick's appearance after the change, now choir director

Filius Flitwick and Griphook are played by the same man, Warwick Davis!!
This here is from Wikipedia: In the film adaptations, Flitwick is portrayed by Warwick Davis. In the third film, Davis plays a music conductor, credited simply as "Wizard". J. K. Rowling said: "I must admit, I was taken aback when I saw the film Flitwick, who looks very much like a goblin/elf (I’ve never actually asked the filmmakers precisely what he is), because the Flitwick in my imagination simply looks like a very small old man."[3] However, Rowling mentions on her official website that Flitwick is human, with "a dash of goblin ancestry."
His appearance on screen noticeably changes in the later films, taking the appearance of the Wizard conductor. He takes on a more human look, and many of the elf-like looks he had in the first two films are gone.

Essence of Random

Sometimes I want our school to have a giant dance party
I like surprise hugs especially when I'm eating
Cats too I like cats. And galoshes.
Having a good week is splendid and nice and plenty of spice
Here are some names I think are weird: Chord Overstreet hi I'm CHORD OVERSTREET what.

GLEE it opened with Misery by Maroon 5, a song I've been obsessed with lately. It almost made up for how badly the rest of the episode sucked.
Has anyone else noticed that Darren Criss's eyebrows are ridiculously isoceles

Eyebrow mischief.

Personality Types

Day 5: I like nice people!!!

Kindness week has me thinking about the types of people we really are.
I just took the Meyer's-Briggs personality test and I am an INFJ, like Martin Luther King Jr. It basically means I am a protector. It's also the most rare of the sixteen personality types.

You can take the test here: http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp

Not-So-Random Acts of Kindness

Day 3 of Kindness Week on this little blog I like to write in:
Imagine what a difference would be made if every person made a resolution to be especially nice to someone every day. If I could only have 3 seconds to talk to the entire world, I would say "be good to each other!" Imagine what great things we could accomplish with pure kindness. Remember, one smile makes two!

Careless Comments

Why do people say the meanest things?
Things about people they don't know or hardly know
And then they say it and it's out and people judge
And rumors spread and people hurt
But why create such a hostile environment
In a place already filled with stress
And grades and friends and fear and LIFE --
And never enough time and too much time and never any time at all
And dark spaces and happy places and light places and bright places
About people they hardly know?
What will it take to make these people look inside themselves
And pull out what bothers them
And break it down, not other people
And hopes and dreams and wishes and confidence
It's only high school. Four years and you're done --
So why do people say the meanest things?

Unintentional Insults

You're a good friend ... at least when you're in the mood for it.
No, you don't look fat in that dress ... not from the side, at least.
You're great at this game ... for a beginner.
That painting looks like someone threw up paint all over it. In an artistic way, of course.
I love this spanish song ... Oh, it's in english? I honestly couldn't tell.
Sure, I'll come to your house ... if I have absolutely nothing else to do.
No seriously, that outfit totally matches ... if you're going for that retro Richard Simmons look.
I love you! By which I mean I love the idea of you ...
Wow, you're pretty smart for a freshman!!! Oh, you're a junior? Hmm.
Don't worry, you're really tall for a 10-year-old!! Oh, you're 16? Huh.
That's an awesome zombie costume!! Oh, that's your prom dress?
What silly facepaint you have on!! Oh, that's just your everyday makeup?

What a nice duck you have there!! Oh, it's a peanut?

Cute Ukulele-Playing Kid of the Week

Here he is! I want to hire him to play at my wedding. And then I want to dress him up in a sailor outfit and give him a shiny blue balloon.

His facial expressions are priceless.

I Promise I'm Not a Stalker

Stalker (n.): the pathological anonymous follower and tab-keeper of another person or persons.

Awkward moments abound when you pass someone in the hallway for the seventh or eighth time in one day. As they start to look at you strangely, you think of telling them it's just a coincidence, but then it would seem weird if you mentioned that you noticed it too. People avoid being slated as stalkers every day. On Facebook, if someone posts a question on their friend's wall that you know the answer to, of course you want to answer it but refrain because you barely know the people and the question was posted less than a minute ago. This is intentionally avoiding being a stalker. However, sometimes it looks like people are being stalkers even when they're not. Here's something that happened to me a few minutes ago:

For my English class, we often post our homework responses in an online forum, a wiki where you can see what your classmates have posted. Homework over this weekend was to read two poems and respond to one of two forums in the wiki. Having read both of them, I chose my favorite of the two and typed up a stellar response. Clicking onto the wiki, I noticed so far, only two people had responded to the poem I had chosen. Excellent! I copied my response from my open word document and prepared to post it into the "reply" box. But what is this? A new response?
-less than a minute ago- Response from ********..
Aw man, this guy just wrote almost exactly what I did! And he posted mere seconds before I was going to!!
Now I'm at a crossroads. Should I just not post my response at all, and respond to the other wiki? Or change my response so it's not so similar? But it was such a wonderful response!! It took me about half an hour to write this one stellar paragraph! It's full of quotes and references, the spelling and grammar are all correct, and it seems to be the longest of the responses so far. But I can't post it!! It's very similar to the one that was just posted, and if I posted mine only a few minutes after his, it would seem I copied from him ..
So, in the end, I changed a few aspects of my paragraph and posted it. It's not as stellar as it was before, and it's still quite similar to the one posted above it. I can't help but think how things would be different if I had just posted my paragraph a minute before I was going to ...
Oh, crap. I just checked our previous night's homework and discovered I posted directly after him on that night, too ...

I promise I'm not a stalker.

Reasons Why I Should be British

I have come to the conclusion that I was supposed to grow up British. I love all British things!! I think that British people are lovely and attractive and have a better sense of humor than Americans.

THE REASONS:
X Factor: One of the biggest American shows EVER is American Idol. I watch the British equivalent, X Factor, and I think it is wonderful. British people seem to have more raw talent than Americans. Sort of like how Britain's Got Talent is about 400x better than America's Got Talent. Just saying ..

HARRY POTTER!!! My obsession. I love absolutely everything about the series, as does everyone!! Harry Potter is something that will never get old. Thanks Ms. Rowling!!

British people can laugh at themselves. This is something you never see Americans do. British people make videos of themselves making tea and ridiculing their slightly old-fashioned system of government. Americans would never make fun of themselves, and deny everything that is their own fault ..

British people are darn attractive. Or as they would say, "dishy" or "fit." But seriously. British teenage boys especially. I think it's mostly to do with the accent, which I love. Which brings me to ...

That beautiful accent!!! Whenever I come across a person with that beautiful British accent, I just want be like, "OOH! Say more words!!" British accents make the people speaking them seem more kind, civilized, funny, and attractive in my mind. All good things! Gotta love that accent. It's irresistible. And fun to try speaking, too!!

Music. Beatles, anyone? Some of the best music has come of of Britain. Must have to do with how the British are so creative!

Musicals. BILLY ELLIOT NEED I SAY MORE. Okay, I will. Sweeney Todd, for example. My Fair Lady!! Gotta love 'em.

Comedy. We already know that British people are the funniest people in the world, but this point is really brought home by Mr. Bean, who I could watch all day.

Britain is Beautiful! People in the UK (yes I know that includes parts of Ireland, which is beautiful too) really know how to take care of their land. Picturing Britain, I picture green landscapes and stunning architecture. Lovely! No wonder people were told to "think of England" when they were going through something unpleasant.

The lingo. I would much rather say I had a "smashing" time at the party. Or saying, "oh, bollocks" when something goes wrong. Which I do! And said in that lovely accent, the language is art! I have also come to reali(s)e that I know more British than American slang. Hmmm..

.....................................................................................
BBC is bookmarked way before the New York Times website or the Washington Post on my computer. I know more about British entertainment and slang than I do American. British children are adorable. Not that I don't love my country, I just feel like I turned up at the wrong place sometimes. Maybe I just didn't speak clearly enough to the Floo Powder ..

Ah, well, I'm off for a spot of tea. Cheerio!

Would Anyone Notice?

If you were missing a middle ab muscle . . . would anyone notice?

If you only conditioned alternating sections of your hair, would anyone notice?

If you wore the exact same outfit every 50 days, would anyone notice?

If I didn't point out that the actor who plays Bill Weasley is the real-life son of Brendan Gleeson, who plays Mad-Eye Moody, would you have noticed?

Would you have noticed if I didn't tell you that if you click the "!" of the purple "Yahoo!" on the Yahoo! homepage, it sings you a tune?

Ukelele Times of the Most Marvelous Kind

Adorable kids playing ukeleles are wonderful and charming.
I think it's because ukeleles are more adorable than regular-sized guitars, and when you give an adorable child an adorable guitar, things get adorable pretty fast.

Although kids playing regular-sized guitars are also adorable, because they're just hidden by the largeness of the guitar.
... sort of like when little kids wear their parents' clothes and shoes ... they look like they've eaten the cake in Alice in Wonderland that says "eat me" and shrunk!! I don't know why I think it's so funny that little kids have small clothes and shoes. And guitars.
I went to a children's museum today and thought the little crawlspaces were so fantastic ... I wish I had really sharp memories from when I was a kid and I could fit in the smallest spaces and when I met people I greeted their kneecaps. That sounds like fun!

Scared by the Strangest Kind of Things

Sometimes I wonder why people jump at loud noises or unexpected movements and sounds. In my mind, it goes a little something like this . . .
Sitting in a boring waiting room, Claude sighs and checks his watch. Still another 25 minutes until his appointment. Claude sits back and his mind begins to drift . . . Claude's mind is having wondrous thoughts of traveling through a peaceful town in Italy, at six in the morning on a small gondola, a harpist by his side and the quiet *swish* of the paddles. He slides into his silk slippers and exits the boat, stepping onto dry land, away from the town and into a vast field of grapevines. The vineyard is quiet, leaving Claude to wander silently about the grapevines, the notes of the harp on the gondola still playing softly behind him. Breathing in the fragrance of the fields of the vineyard and the grapes, Claude plucks a perfect grape from a vine and brings it to his mouth to sample it. As his hand reaches his face, he prepares to take the first sweet bite and "CLAUDE JENSEN?!?" the receptionist calls into the waiting room. Claude jumps two feet in the air, having forgotten where he was. The other clients in the waiting room snicker at Claude ..

I have always wondered if there were any people who were prepared for anything, and could not be scared. Nerves of steel, if you will. But for the majority of us who jump a foot in the air every time something*BAM!*happens unexpectedly, I wonder if all of our subconscious minds are usually at a peaceful place, like a vineyard or a forest, just by default.

. . . because that would be fantastic.

Except eating spaghetti while driving is dangerous. Albeit comical.

Response to Last Post

Short thought for a very stressful week; the world would be so much better if we all shared this kid's philosophy.

He's marvelous. More musings coming soon!

Saturday, January 15, 2011

. . . It makes me feel so very little.

Every now and then our minds stray to the universe; how mind-blowingly large everything is, how we know we probably will never figure out the true size of it all: if it could even be calculated! But even here on tiny little Earth - being one person out of 7 BILLION people can make you feel pretty insignificant. And Earth is hardly a speck on the universe's radar. Makes you feel pretty teeny, doesn't it?

Check this out:

... Marvelous Musings, indeed! Looks like we have to shout loud to be heard in this world.
Do something significant today; it's been done before! Single beings have reached out to the whole world. If you could be one of seven billion, making a difference on a global spectrum, what would you do?

Movie Review! Oh yes

127 Hours. The Oscars are coming up next month, and this movie is definitely in the running for best picture; as it should be! I saw this a few weeks ago, and I'm still thinking about it. I've bought the soundtrack, researched the (true) story of Aron Ralston, and looked up some other projects the actors had been in. James Franco is amazing, as he was in Milk, a very diverse actor.
This movie is rated R because it is very graphic during one scene; allow me to explain.
Aron Ralston was hiking alone when he fell into a crevice and trapped his arm between the rock wall and a boulder which loosened and fell as Aron slipped. Stuck in the same position for 127 hours, unable to move or eject his arm, Aron has to make an agonizing decision. (I don't want to give away the ending but it has probably become evident what Ralston eventually had to do).
It is a concept which people never want to even think about, much less consider, but this was a reality for Ralston. This is a wonderful adaptation of a very true story, and I highly recommend it. It shows what humans are capable of when faced with death.

So there you go - this is a fantastic production, excellent acting, and very moving.

Recommendation: Don't watch this movie while eating. I was watching an interview and people were saying some had fainted during some of the more graphic scenes. I wouldn't let that deter you, however! Keep teddy bears close at hand.
Check it out!

Perception

Today we are going to talk about perception. It's no lie that movies as cool as Inception and the Pirates of the Caribbean series look totally rad onscreen. However, what the actors see are quite different, as they act before many of the special effects are added in. When you see the actors in these movies out on the street, many people think "wow! they're so brave! they traveled to their doom in a giant whirlpool and fended off the kraken of the sea!" Unfortunately, if you watch any of the behind-the-scenes videos for any of these films, you will be disappointed. Often these actors are braving the cold out in a drafty studio with a nothing but a green screen behind them. It's lovely to think that movies are reality, however. It seems better that way. Another example is reality television; as soon as the cameras turn off, the actors and actresses strip off their fake eyelashes and go to their actual, real-life homes. Really, do you think that these people just wake up in the morning with perfect makeup and fake eyelashes and curled hair? It's just not realistic.

I got to thinking about perception because of this video I've had bookmarked for a while on my computer:
(Only watch to about 1:20 or so because then they start talking about how the ink is made and it's not relevant to to the topic of perception)

I rather enjoy this video, it's very relaxing and nice. The classical music in the foreground adds a nice touch and the visuals are gorgeous. However, if you watch further along in the video, you can see the factory workers wearing earplugs and masks over their noses and mouths. In reality, this is a loud, dangerous factory full of fumes. Takes the magic out of it a bit, doesn't it? And that's just the question. This idea of beauty; should it be messed with? By exposing the reality behind these delightful pictures, the magic seems gone. Human nature wants to believe the magic, though. Maybe it's better to not think about the technicalities and just dream of lovely workshops where ink oozes in pretty colors all day. Makes life much better, doesn't it?
Marvelous musings.

The Strangest Kind of Old Advertisements

Hello!
I came across some strange old advertisements today and couldn't resist sharing some with you. Most of these are from 50-60 years ago; good thing, too!

                                                            "Begin Early," indeed!

                                                    Spam 'n' Eggs -WOW! *cough*

"How soon is too soon?" Well, it would be safe to say that feeding your infant soda is "too soon." Is there even such thing as a "Soda Pop Board of America," anymore?

Hmmm .. not sure exactly how driving alone is driving with Hitler, but okay! Go ahead and, uh .. share your car? Or something?
Ah, yes. Thought I should end with an offensive one. All I can say is; good thing we don't live in these times anymore!

I wonder what advertisements of today people will laugh at in 50 or 60 years. "Ha! Portable music players you had to manually operate! What a time-waster! Check out my thought-powered device! It's microscopic and sits right inside my head! I'll just show you how it works by telepathy. Because we can do that now in 2070!"
Marvelous musings.

Welcome! I enjoy being me

Hi I'm Cecilia! Sometimes there are thoughts, and sometimes there are blogs. And sometimes there is a time when you tell a friend you're thinking of starting a blog and she starts one, and so does another friend, and then you don't want to feel out of the loop so you start one as well. And sometimes there's peer pressure but more often there is not. And yes I will wear all my favorite clothes at once to school because it's my birthday and on your birthday you can be exceptional. But why only birthdays?

..some tea for your troubles?
